I was spending a little time in the Word one day, going through 2 Corinthians, when a verse
came alive for me. It was in chapter 5, verse 15. The phrase that drew my attention was, “live for
Christ”. Here is the whole verse in the New Living Translation, “He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and
was raised for them”.
Everyone who is born again, everyone who has received new life from Jesus, every honest to
goodness Christian, will live for Christ. There are many opinions on what it means to live for Christ. Still, it is obvious from this scripture that the purpose for living, the reason you are alive, is to live for Christ. You get up each morning with the express goal to live that day for Jesus Christ.
To live for Christ will bring glory to God, to cause others to think highly of God, because of what you say and what you do throughout each day. Billy Graham’s words and actions cause others to think highly of God. Ours should also because we have made it clear to everyone around us that we are
children of God.
Consider how crucial it is for us to understand clearly what it means to live for Christ each day so that our lives bring glory to God. The new believer wants to know what his life is to look like. The
seasoned Christian needs a point on his spiritual compass to keep him from straying from the straight
and narrow road. We all need the assurance that the life we live proves that we belong to Jesus and will therefore spend eternity with Him. A clear and simple explanation would be of great value. So, to keep it simple, let us focus on two major directives from the Bible for the followers of God.
First, we are to strive for holiness. Love for God and fellow man compels us to strive for
holiness. This is the God quality that promotes a right relationship with God and also with others
through right living. “But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is
holy” (1 Peter 1:15 NLT). Others will see and know what God is like when His children are holy as He is holy.
Second, we are to seek and save the lost. Jesus, our Holy Savior, was sent to this earth by the Father to seek and to save the lost. It is his mission. It is also the mission we have officially accepted
here at The Church on Broadway. He has called his followers to join him in his mission. “So we are
Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead. ‘Come back to God!'” (2 Corinthians 5:20 NL T).
It is essential for us to know that we are here, we are saved, to live for Christ! It is our purpose for living each and every day, and it will bring glory to God. Let us make it a high priority to remind each other that as individuals and as a church family our principal reason for living is to strive for holiness
and seek the lost.
