Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13
It is a few days before Christmas as I write, a time of celebrating the birth of Christ. Soon a new year will start and God has impressed upon me that this will be a year of change for me. There are already known changes coming: the company I work for is being acquired in January; my mortgage will be paid off; I am going to Haiti. It is a mix of unknown and good, with a degree of uncertainty. But beyond these things, is more change that I don’t know.
So what do you do when you know change is coming? Are you fearful? Are you anxious? That is the very human thing to do, isn’t it? But God is calling me to trust Him, rest in Him, find refuge in Him. He is the one who said “Be still” and the waters became perfectly calm. He said, “Be healed,” and persons were instantly healed. Jesus showed His deity by showing His great power. So when He says, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age,” (Matt 28:20) we need to believe Him.
This verse means I will not be alone in the midst of change – whether it is good or bad, He promised He will be with me. I can hold on to that truth. Nothing shall separate me from his love. “For I am convinced that either death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
These promises fill me with comfort, peace and especially hope. Our God is a God of hope who promises a future with Him. He is not a God of fear, anxiety, or lack of peace.
And so, as I, as we all, begin a new year, we can be excited about what lies ahead because of who we know and how much He loves us. There may be change that lies ahead. There may be uncertainty. I am sure there will be unknowns for me and the team as we go to Haiti, but I can rest in Him knowing He has all the details taken care of. He’s got this covered.
