Your Witness-A True Witness – by Don Gibson

Proverbs 14:25 says “A true witness delivers souls: but a deceitful witness speaks lies. 11 God means witnessing to be serious. So much so that in 1 Timothy 5:19 he warns believers not to receive an accusation against an elder unless it comes from two or three witnesses-meaning make sure you know it to be true by hearing it from more than one person. That is serious.

But how about when believers tell others about Christ as Savior and Lord? Are there other witnesses that reveal the same? Sure hope so! “/ have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 11 (1 Corinthians 3:6). God calls you and me as believers to witness Christ. We do. But have you ever had others challenge you about what you know to be God’s truth? How do we justify what we say? God’s Word. “For the Bible tells me so,” said the song writer.

But there’s another way we justify what we say; and people use that whether we realize it or not. It’s our behavior-what others observe about us in our reactions to situations, our interests, our motives, our values, and the list goes on. It counts with people who know us and with those who don’t; with believers and non-believers. Realistically, our interest in others counts as our witness. In 1 Thessalonians 2:8, Paul told believers, “So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. 11

Examples: Have you ever blown it on the behavior part? I have. And believers who see us fail are a witness for Christ themselves depending on whether they forgive us or not. And we; by whether we repent to God and ask them for forgiveness. Here’s another example: How willing are we to help someone else, or help in the church, or even offer help when we don’t even see a need? Sometimes we can help and sometimes not. Maybe we’re already obligated. But what is our pattern that others see-that of a helper or that of rarely helping others? Another example: What decisions do others see that we make? Do they see us in such a way that God is leading us? These and many other ways are our witness for Christ. It’s something we should pray about. “Dear Lord, use me as you will in my words and actions.” 1 John S:10a addresses our witness when it says, He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself.”
